*All events are 21+ valid ID required for entry* 7 PM – Doors8 PM – Show LOWERCASE ROSES Mover, the fourth full-length album of introspective and artful pop rock from Philadelphia’s Lowercase Roses, explores many angles of its titular noun: emotional changes, shifts through time and space, and the labor connected to moving—which happens to be a job worked by Matt Scheuermann, the project’s songmaker, producer, and primary instrumentalist. Motion paces through the liminal scenes the record’s subjects haunt, and it flows between the doubt and desirousness of Mover’s lyrics. “I cannot overlook the relentless beauty of life,” admits Scheuermann, in spite of the destructive forces humanity wields against itself: capitalism, ecological destruction, genocide, incarceration. “We’re destroying our home and our family. But we were given a home and a family in the first place, and that is incredible.” He sees movement as a way through existence and understanding, a path to learn and grow with the earth. And so Mover is about acknowledging bad things, but also believing in better things. It coalesces into a warm and well-built home—sunny in its quirky decor, soft in its honesty, strongly structured by the supportive bones of Scheuermann’s masterful songcraft. Layers bustle and build, nudge aside or disappear, come back in a differently-tinted form, like musical furniture staged into a lived-in place of refuge. This restless arrangement and rearrangement reveals deft architecture: a beautifully uncanny, suspenseful-yet-steady collection about love, community, and the precarious act of making something meaningful amid end times. KOOF IBI Koof Ibi is a multi-instrumentalist in the Philadelphia area. On any given day you could find him strolling down Broad Street straight into the Kimmel Center with brass bands like The West Philadelphia Orchestra, sharing the big stage with Japanese Breakfast, or performing in the Philadelphia Museum of Art with poet/musician Moor Mother. Koof effortlessly blends his diverse musical influences into his own distinct style. At his solo shows Koof combines live instruments, loops, samples, and effects pedals to create surprising soundscapes, re-invented covers, and sonic liberation. LIZDELISE Lizdelise is an interdisciplinary artist and performer who makes music that centers queer joy, embraces the inevitability of grief, and makes you shake your *peach emoji*. Their sounds have been heard far and wide, most recently at the Cannes Short Film Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, and Lincoln Center. They are an Aries moon but you’ll have to guess their sun.

The music on Oneida’s 17th full-length album, Expensive Air, all started as tightly structured, melodic rock songs then broke open these structures through the instinctual, improvisatory interplay, honed to razor sharpness in two years of live performance. “Success is like laughing in a car gunning carelessly through an ice storm,” says Bobby Matador, “and Expensive Air is how you laugh at yourself as the car spins into the ditch, or a tree. On her new album, Neon Summer Skin, Bedouine, the project of Azniv Korkejian, explores this feeling of safety long before one can fully understand the concept. Written with vivid, honest and intimate imagery after visiting her family in Saudi Arabia, it tells the story of family and upbringing, and mourns the end of her childhood. There is a singular resonance and newfound heft in this music previously unheard in Bedouine’s discography.Bedouine is known for making gentle, lilting folk songs that build fingerpicked guitar melodies into tsunamis of emotion. Her lyric-driven, uniquely-arranged music has been described as “slice of life” and “ASMR pop.” Before she became a cellist and vocalist, her father taught her the basics of bass and guitar at home. They would play together by ear, which fostered her deep musicality and a creative ethic that prioritizes joyful collaboration. Collaboration has always been at the centre of her practice — whether it be in improvising, playing in her friends’ bands (Dorothea Paas, André Ethier, Little Kid, Evan J Cartwright), or running her label Vain Mina Records. Her LPs Staying Mellow Blows (2022) and Progress Bakery (2025) were long listed for the Polaris Music Prize. ANOTHER MICHAEL Something very special happens in the moment when a listener truly connects to a song. It’s an intangible reaction that bridges science and emotion, turning firing synapses into something cosmically beautiful. Another Michael exists for that moment: when a song transforms the setting of a long walk home, or speaks to a past experience while simultaneously making a new one, or taps into something universal by relating details so specific and personal that they could only be revealed in music. In 2023 the band released Wishes To Fulfill, the first in a pair of albums dedicated to their love of song, and now they’re back already with the experimental next chapter, Pick Me Up, Turn Me Upside Down. Together, the dual LPs create and pay tribute to the power of transcendent musical moments. 22° HALO

*All events are 21+ valid ID required for entry* 7 PM – Doors8 PM – Show ROCKETSHIP Some of the best records are those that transcend the usual parameters of music to create worlds of their own. When it’s clear that what you’re listening to isn’t just a collection of that year’s songs, but a deeply thought-out, architected space where ideas clash, converse, interlock; these are the albums that end up lasting well beyond their era, changing with us, and revealing new surprises every time we return to them. One of the clearest examples of an album that crafts a strange and beautiful world not quite like any other is Rocketship’s 1996 full-length debut A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness. Even upon arrival, this was an experience unto itself, and 30 years later, these eight songs of bittersweet bliss still feel new. Slumberland is delighted to release a 30th Anniversary edition of this instant classic, making it readily available on vinyl and CD once again after years of unavailability and collector demand.Rocketship came into focus in the early ‘90s, incubating through a series of demos and early 7”s into their fully-realized album. The continuum of sounds that made up A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness were recorded at home by bandleader and vocalist/songwriter Dusty Reske with help from members of the early lineup. While they sometimes melt into one another, each of the eight songs goes somewhere a little different. The bright, jangling guitars, zooming tempo, and co-ed vocals of brilliant opener “I Love You Like the Way That I Used to Do” blurs mod energy into something dreamier, practically blueprinting the next decade of indie pop in the process. The atmospheric weather patterns of “Heather, Tell Me Why” drift between melancholic acoustic guitars and gusts of overwhelming noise. It’s baroque pop from another solar system, but it doesn’t feel jarring when the bass-forward slow down of “Let’s Go Away” follows, or bounding fits of fuzzy enthusiasm like “Carrie Cooksey” enter the picture. The songs cautiously orbit each other, all glued together by that interplanetary all-tube M2 Hammond organ, loud in the mix. This was an album of unrepentantly vulnerable melodies, unusual seventh chords, lingering ambient interludes, and soft sentiments in a time when unfriendly, self-conscious punk rock was the order of the day. Even in the considerably gentler environs of the U.S. indie pop scene of the time, these were bold moves. LIGHTHEADED Lightheaded are, simply, a great pop group. Their songs are full of melody and harmony, are bittersweet and memorable, familiar yet original. The Jersey based jangle pop softies make songs that call on the unsatisfied tunefulness of classic indie pop and college rock, as well as tapping into the idealistic daydreaming of '60s chamber pop. They signed on with Slumberland Records for the release of their proper debut album, 2024's Combustible Gems, then added UK based Skep Wax to their list of sponsors for the thoughtful, reverb-bathed follow-up, 2025's Thinking, Dreaming, Scheming.

Delivered with a punk urgency, their music blends prog and psych rock, layered with riffs that spiral into chaotic yet precise sonic landscapes. They confront the absurd, the magical, and the morbid with raw hooks and frantic energy, intensified by their live performances. HUMILITARIAN The five-piece rock group, born out of dusty basement shows and independent venues of Philadelphia, came out screaming from the start with a sound initially drawn from anthemic and powerful indie rock; heavily influenced by emo with traces of modern psychedelia. Humilitarian has maintained a steadfast, cultish following since its inception in early 2019 with “alternative music for the introspective optimist” and “dance rock for emo people”. ALRIGHT JUNIOR Alright Junior is one of those rare alternative rock bands that can be both fiercely technical and emotionally immediate. Their sound blends driving rhythms, turbulent dynamics, evoking lyrics, and melodic urgency into something unmistakably their own, equal parts intensity and finesse. Each member brings a sharpened musicianship that elevates their live shows into kinetic, high-energy experiences that feel larger than the room.

*All events are 21+ valid ID required for entry* 7 PM – Doors8 PM – Show COLA C.O.L.A. is sort of a self-titled album. It’s an acronym for Cost of Living Adjustment, a fitting conceptual framework for the band’s third record. Why? Because C.O.L.A. considers, among other things, socialism vs. hell. It considers: rolling the dice of life. The eerie and sweet pangs that nostalgia can provoke. This is not new territory for band members Tim Darcy, Evan Cartwright, and Ben Stidworthy. It is, in Cartwright’s words “a deepening of what we’ve been doing.” C.O.L.A. is an intricate, beautiful, and sometimes strange record. It is the band’s most refined offering. A perfection of carefully honed aesthetic impulses. Cola, as a band, says Darcy is defined by its “tasteful minimalism.” A deep appreciation for making music that is romantic, subtle, and deceptively intense. C.O.L.A., however, is the band’s most maximalist work to date. This is a little tongue and cheek (“We were so worried,” says Cartwright, “About all the songs on this record being too different”). In practice, this maximalism means that a song like “Hedgesitting,” has both live drums and a sample drum loop. “Hedgesitting,” is a gorgeous, lush song. It’s like a deconstructed, chopped & screwed b-side from the Cure’s Disintegration. It’s also a little indebted to Sarah Records. “When you were young,” Darcy sings at the song’s start, “you came to make it.” C.O.L.A., like everything written by the band, is inherently collaborative. The band writes everything separately, then comes together and works in the studio. Look again to “Hedgesetting,” to see this in action, which started out with chords that Darcy had sent, then the band expanded it together, with Stidworthy remixing it right before heading to the studio. This division of labor works intuitively. It is a part of the band’s DNA to say, take an arrangement Stidworthy wrote, and then have Darcy and Cartwright build upon it. Take “Favoured Over the Ride,” as an example. “I wanted to create a dusky, melancholy palette for Tim to write lyrics for,” says Stidworthy. The song starts with a lonely, dreamy guitar riff. Then there’s a crisp line of bass and it all comes into focus: “What’s on the ceiling that’s caught your gaze?” sings Darcy. It’s a moment of clarity on a record that is interested abstraction. C.O.L.A. is full of these clarifying moments: where a whole swirl of feelings become so clear that it almost hurts a little bit. PARKiNG

Across the ten tracks that make upthe seventh and newest Widowspeak record, intimate spaces and stages of love are captured with anostalgic, vaseline-coated lens. Candles burn inside red glass as lovers get close in a leather booth. Celebrity headshots gaze down like angels in a restaurant. Elsewhere, carnations are pressed in a black book and dancers pull each other close. Widowspeak is a band that riffs on big emotions without beingtoo self-serious. The sweetness, even silliness, of an extended limerent phase that becomes as all-consuming as a pulpy trade paperback. Cars and their drivers serve as a way to talk about codependency. And old love gets worn in, soft as an old tshirt. If music can simultaneously be naturalistic and noir, saturated and lush, that is Widowspeak. They’re a band that knows how to set a scene. These songs use intimate moments to talk about deeper heartaches: the restlessness inherent in modern existence, waiting around for something tohappen. Or, feeling at odds with playing a role in your own life. “Roses” might be the most romantic Widowspeak record, but it’s also the most deeply realist: the stage is set not with dramatic overtures but the backdrop of the minutiae and repetition of daily acts. Small observations before, during, and after work: the ritual of pouring water for customers, catching a cold on your day off. Daydreaming about winning the lottery, or maybe realizing you already won. Here, love is away to talk about what drives us, and Widowspeak suggest it can be the whole point. The light that illuminates the dark corners of a day, a life. A reason to keep going despite the pain it can cause. As thetitle track goes:Not all thorns will prick you, you still feel the first. And now you don’t grow roses because the one still hurts... I want to be the one. THOMAS DOLLBAUM The realest-deal storyteller in indie-rock today is the Tampa-born, New Orleans based singer/songwriter Thomas Dollbaum, and Birds of Paradise is his most powerful and dynamic work yet. Following up his critically acclaimed Wellswood (Big Legal Mess, 2022) and Drive All Night EP (Dear Life Records, 2025), Birds of Paradise is a goodbye letter to lost loved ones and former selves. These songs find Dollbaum searching for acceptance in the transient in-between places: Florida’s pine flatwoods, backroads leading to 1-95, where birds fly across the water. And even though the ghosts of his alt-county predecessors Townes and Molina are definitely present, on Birds of Paradise, Dollbaum emerges from their shadows waving to the past, sounding all the more like himself.

As if rising out of the ocean, her swell of inspiration crests by absorbing everything from traditional Mexican Ranchera music to nineties alternative rock and 21st century indie pop, reaching shore, and leaving a hypnotic hybrid in its wake. In her words, she makes music “for the Latina girls who love Gwen Stefani, Foster the People, and Julieta Venegas, heard all of the classic Latin artists at a quinceañera, and went back to school where everybody was listening to Lana Del Rey.” Following an independent grind, the Mexican Salvadorian-American singer and songwriter posted up millions of streams on 2021’s Wish You Were Here EP. People appropriately christened her “California girl meets Latina queen.” Along the way, she graced the stages of festivals such as Lollapalooza and BottleRock in addition to supporting Omar Apollo on tour. She further honed a genre-breaking, yet culture-integrating vision with her 2023 EP, Un Millón de Besos. A sought-after songwriter, she has notably penned songs for the likes of Anuel AA, The Warning, and Gwen Stefani, with whom she collaborated on “True Babe” and “Purple Irises” [with Blake Shelton]. Coming full circle in 2024, she paid homage to her grandmother and grandfather on Mar y Tierra EP. It marked her first full Spanish-language effort—produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner Lester Mendez and co-written with Maria Vertiz, Cuco, and León Leiden. Among many highlights,“Sirena” [feat. Cuco] amassed 1.4 million Spotify streams. After organically building an audience, Niko knows who her people are, and she feeds them with her 2025 Ring Ring EP[Atlantic Records] and much more to come. FRANCOIS FUQUA

Releasing May 8th, 2026, the album was shaped by a period of solitary writing and a preference for more subtle, atmospheric arrangements. While the songs began in isolation, Savoth eventually brought them to life by collaborating with a small, stellar lineup of Philadelphia musicians who helped realize the project's understated vision. It is a humble record that doesn't aim for the anthemic, choosing instead to lean into the stillness of the early morning hours. For Savoth, Midnight Sun is less of a grand statement and more of a quiet check-in with his own craft, supported by the community that has long defined his sound. MAX DAVEY Max Davey is a Philadelphia-based Indie Folk, Americana artist and producer known for her intimate storytelling that explores themes of love, grief, and life's complexities. Often collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Steve Novoa, she has released a series of eclectic singles, making a mark on the local Philly music scene. She’s performed at regional festivals like The Philadelphia Folk Festival, ALT 104.5 FestivALT, and Midnight Mountain Music Show. Max is currently working on her debut record. When not on stage or in her home studio, you’ll find her at local shows supporting the music community. JAMES CLARK James Clark is a Philadelphia area singer-songwriter crafting story-driven folk/pop with an Americana edge, turning everyday moments into vivid, emotional snapshots. Anchored by a soulful, gritty, and dynamic voice, his performances move easily between stripped-down intimacy and soaring, full-bodied intensity, drawing listeners into the heart of each song. A regular presence on stages across eastern Pennsylvania, James has built a reputation for compelling live sets and honest songwriting rooted in storytelling and atmosphere. One thing is certain: Bernhard is one of his generation’s most dynamic (and busiest) musicians. Hailed by Okayplayer as a “pillar of the Philadelphia music scene,” his solo debut Fool’s Pirouette was released in January 2022 and was featured on NPR’s notable new music playlist. In that relatively short time, the Austin trio have not only toured the world over, created their own musical eco-system and released three seminal full-length albums, they have done it in a manner that avoided compromise, welcomed free experimentation and avoided labels outside of "menacing," “compelling” and “must hear.”Portrayal of Guilt made an immediate impact in underground circles with their debut Let Pain Be Your Guide by mixing nihilistic hardcore, black metal, classic screamo, and imaginative textures. We Are Always Alone and CHRISTF*CKER LPs followed in 2021, the band’s breakout body blows that corroded the band’s commitment to genre, nodding at industrial music, post-metal, sludge and even post-hardcore, all while cementing the band’s tendencies toward experimentalism. Portrayal of Guilt’s fearless spirit reimagined their ownsound as classical (Devil Music EP) and EBM / goth (CHRISTF*CKER II) on more recent efforts. And though the pacing of releases and the band’s evolution has remained steady, Portrayal of Guilt’s execution has kept their audiences hungry for the band’s ever-evolving sound. STREET SECTS THE INFINITY RING COMMITMENT Commitment is an inevitability, set to release their full length, “Fear Of”, on LA-via Philadelphia label Get Better Records this spring. “Fear Of” packs a punch composed of raw punk, hardcore, and d-beat inspired music that essentially results in fast punk that sometimes includes groove as often as it does blast beats. Lyrically, the themes of “Fear Of “include sexual liberation, sacred rage, vengeance, violence, insecurity, surveillance, overconsumption, social media, and mind control/brainwashing. The band aims to peel off listener’s faces, leaving grinning skulls and exposed brains as the canvas for vocalist Tatiana Salazar’s indoctrination. A novel, maybe, when she was in undergraduate school for creative writing. But music always called to her, and it wasn’t until she moved to Chicago and met a stable of musicians that she realized that recording was within reach.Walker formed Case Oats in 2018 and turned the band into a Chicago fixture until finally, in 2025, signing with Merge Records, and releasing a debut record to critical acclaim. Chicago Sun-Times called it a “standout debut.” Rolling Stone hailed it as “a winning set of alt-country and folk songs with warm melodies, novelistic verses, and unassuming vocals that recall Daniel Johnston and Kimya Dawson.”The album was produced by Walker’s longtime bandmate and fiancé, Spencer Tweedy (drums), and recorded in a makeshift Chicago basement studio, in the bungalow rented by Jason Ashworth (bass) and Max Subar (guitar and pedal steel), featuring fiddle work by Scott Daniel and guest pianist/organist Nolan Chin. Walker’s songs get to the heart of relationships and experience, and bring city life down to earth—to the porch swing, where Walker believes everyone ultimately belongs. For over a decade the singer, songwriter and producer Adam Andrzejewski has used the moniker as a wide creative umbrella, under which he’s made a vast body of work that’s as consistently compelling as it is constantly changing. This deft ability to blend sounds and styles has become his calling card, but no matter the genre signifiers–from rap beats, to new wave synths, to goth atmospherics–the beating heart of WPSE is Andrzejewski’s singular voice and esoteric-yet-emotional lyricism. Those key elements have centered the project through musical explorations, and now on his latest full-length, Mossy Oak Shadow, Andrzejewski really puts them to the test. Shedding thumping 808s and intricate production in favor of a no-frills band and sparse live recording, the album is a stirring collection of hazy folk rock songs that prove Wicca Phase Springs Eternal can truly be anything. “I always kind of thought that as long as I have the Wicca Phase Springs Eternal name that I can do whatever I want,” Andrzejewski explains. “The name provides a framework for the lyrics and aesthetics of the project–my songwriting with a mystical overlay to it–and as long as I can make something work within that, then the genre doesn’t totally matter.” That daring creative mentality is what steered Andrzejewski when he first started the WPSE project, through his work as a co-founder of the influential GothBoiClique collective, or as member of Thraxxhouse and Misery Club, and even with his punk side project, Pay For Pain. Still, few could have guessed that the new proper Wicca Phase Springs Eternal release would be a set of country-leaning folk songs performed without a wink in sight. As with all things Wicca Phase, Mossy Oak Shadow finds Andrzejewski fully committed. “There’s always been acoustic songs on my records but usually they’re in the context of a beat-based Wicca Phase album. I think the idea here was to just kind of start fresh and go hard in this other direction,” he says. “The temptation is to call it a country record, I don't really think it’s that–but there’s acoustic guitar and slide guitar, and I think my interests and themes do have elements of country in sort of an archetypical way.” FANCLUBWALLET Fanclubwallet is the indie rock project of cartoonist-turned-musician Hannah Judge, a longtime champion of Ottawa’s local music scene. His musical career began and blossomed in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio at the tail end of the 00’s with his band Signals Midwest. As Signals grew to become one of the tentpoles of Cleveland’s independent music community, Stern's songwriting prowess grew and his world-traveling continued, with various iterations and projects eventually reaching the UK, Europe, Australia, China, and Japan.Max’s latest 12-song LP, In the Good Light, was released on Los Angeles-based Lauren Records on August 9, 2024, and features contributions from members of Ratboys, Sincere Engineer, Into It. Over It, and Slaughter Beach, Dog. Pedal and lap steel contributions from Mike "Slo-Mo" Brenner (best known for his work in Magnolia Electric Company) are woven throughout, contributing a sweet and wistful edge to the album's twelve tracks. The end result is a collection of thoughtfully crafted, pop-oriented songwriting filtered through a DIY punk ethos. In the Good Light finds Maxwell Stern embracing love, tenderness, and authenticity. You can feel it in the performances and collaborations. You can hear it in Max’s voice, in the scenes he captures and the moments he memorializes in song. The title track speaks to that authenticity:"I wanna see you in the good light / further out where your hope and home cancollide / So sing it out into the steep night / I wanna see you in the good light" LABRADOR The sort of lean, sharp pop music that you get from a steady diet of Motown, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival. The short-story wit of Paul Weller, Smokey Robinson, Nick Lowe. For acclaimed harpist and songwriter Mikaela Davis’ new album, Graceland Way (due TK via Kill Rock Stars), that singularity was a hillside home in Chevy Chase Canyon, a spot nestled in Los Angeles County where time slowed, the world fell away, and Davis could create from a sense of warmth and deep attentiveness. On Big Dumb Riffs, that screw is cranked incredibly tight.“We just wanted ‘the part’: The opening of Pantera’s ‘Primal Concrete Sledge’, the breakdown in Primus’ ‘Pudding Time’ — the shit that makes you move and lose your mind. Just that part the whole time.”Across 11 concise, taut songs — most clocking in around 2 minutes or less — Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol demonstrates their skillful ability to blend the merciless low end of Leo Lydon’s 8-string guitar, Aaron Metzdorf’s masterful chordwork on the bass, and Sean St.Germain’s driving drumming.Hot on the heels of their breakout 5th studio release Doom Wop (2023), Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol returns with Big Dumb Riffs: A whole new variant of the fuzzed out, overdriven, melodic, groovy music they have been making since 2016. While Big Dumb Riffs is decidedly more aggressive and rhythmic, it still retains the overtly melodic feel of Doom Wop. But Leo Lydon’s vocals are considerably more angry and negative (song titles like “1-800-EAT-SHIT” and “Body Bag” should be a clue.)“The whole writing process was, ‘what if we just played two notes the whole song’,” Metzdorf says. “‘What if we tuned down to almost unusable string tension?’, ‘what if we write a record that will make everyone say ‘wow that is dumb’? Leo and I really move around on stage a lot. Being a dingus is crucial to the groove. All these riffs were designed to allow us to act bigger and dumber on stage.”Big Dumb Riffs will be available for streaming and download on March 22, 2024. LP to follow in late Spring. AMERICAN SHARKS American Sharks is a three-piece band hailing from Austin, TX. Their punk-metal hybrid sound blends pop hooks with blasting-yer-face riffs resulting in something akin to if Weezer went Stoner Rock. Nominated for a Latin Grammy Award and regarded as a defining release of their generation, the album helped establish the band as one of Brazil’s most important contemporary rock acts.Recorded in Gijón, Spain, during a break in their first international tour, the album captured the energy of a band whose songs were forged on the road and shaped by live experimentation. For this anniversary performance, Boogarins revisit the album through the lens of their evolved live sound, bringing back classic arrangements and improvisations that became central to their concerts. More than a nostalgic celebration, the show aims to create new memories by reconnecting audiences—both longtime followers and new listeners—with the music, stories, and spirit of “Manual.” GARCIA PEOPLES Formed in New Jersey by guitarists Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki, the band took a few years to find their flying shape, solidifying into a lineup with Danny’s brother Cesar on drums and Derek Spaldo on bass by mid-2016. Ramping up their acceleration around the time of their 2018 Cosmic Cash debut on Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records, they’ve blasted through residencies and new songs and sessions and collaborations, relocating to New York, picking up two new members in keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Pat Gubler and bassist Andy Cush, and leaving a trail of live tapes in their wake. This year, they’ve delivered not one but two new albums for BBiB: the sleek and song-oriented Natural Facts and the sprawling improvisatory opus of One Step Behind. 2019 also saw the first performances by the full Garcia Peoples lineup, a six-person behemoth with Spaldo on third guitar. With a stash of live recordings accumulating at the Live Music Archive, Garcia Peoples’ music is very much a living entity. Since the release of their previous two albums, songs have started to expand, jam suites have grown, and experiments have been undertaken. The first part of 2019 has seen Garcia Peoples back Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth (an expanded Solar Peoples Band has hit double-drummer overdrive several times now), and joined with guitarist Ryley Walker. They’ve improvised on WFMU, and jammed with the sounds of ocean waves and falling rain at strange late night happenings. Since childhood, that dream had been simple—write songs, play in bands, live inside “indierock.” But a run selling merch for one of the era’s biggest indie stars unsettled that conviction. From his vantage point on the bus, the everyday grind of touring felt out of step with the spellbinding shows; encores gave way to a working reality that showed him the job-like side of something he’d only ever romanticized and left him wondering where the glow had gone. To his green worldview, the gap between the fantasy of “making it” and its reality was jarring. If this was “the dream,” he thought, maybe it needed to be reconsidered. New York was meant to be a clean slate, maybe even the place he’d learn another trade and leave music behind. Then, less than a day into his Bushwick sublet, a man with a gun kicked in his bedroom door, forced him to the floor, and tied his hands with TV cables. In the days after the robbery, unable to make sense of anything except through song, he started writing again. Those songs became the beginning of a new project he called Sluice.Sluice, now a four-piece band from Durham, North Carolina—with Morris on guitar and vocals, Oliver Child-Lanning on bass and various instruments, Avery Sullivan on drums, and LibbyRodenbough on fiddle—return with Companion, their third album and Mtn Laurel Recording Co. debut. It follows 2023’s Radial Gate, the quietly beloved record Morris made after fleeing New York for a Craigslist house in Hillsborough with then-stranger Child-Lanning, tracking songs at Sylvan Esso’s studio Betty’s while working carpentry jobs and wondering, as he sings on “WhatThe Fuck?,” if he should do something else like “go back to school.” Radial Gate caught him halfway out the door of music, steeped in a hermit-like loneliness of rivers, dams, and floodgates. Instead, its release brought the dream back, but it looked different than it did to the“kid reading in a bunk” on a tour bus, crying and asking, “what happened to it all feeling so good?” that he sings about in “Vegas.” Companion begins where that disenchanted loneliness leaves off. Recorded with producer/engineer Alli Rogers at Betty’s in the winter of 2024 and slowly tended over two years, it sounds like someone deciding there may yet be a dream of music worth struggling for—and that the point of that dream isn’t stardom or escape, but companionship. HIDING PLACES Hiding Places formed in the countryside of Athens, Georgia in 2020, but their roots trace back to a shared college radio station at UNC Chapel Hill. On Two Wheels Move the Soul, Robber Robber offer themselves as ignition and capture every sound in the wake. Involuntarily thrust into the throws of rootless nomadism, Robber Robber ringleader Nina Cates collects a series of pressurized vignettes to assemble the Burlington quartet’s thrillingly explosive sophomore album. Two Wheels Move the Soul was written and recorded throughout the winter of 2024 and 2025, a season of Cates’ life characterized by near-constant upheaval. In January of 2025, Cates (and Robber Robber co-founder) Zack James were displaced from their longtime home at the behest of a landlord’s call to have their building demolished. In a moment’s notice — and amidst a particularly brutal Vermont winter — Cates and James were left to fend for themselves. Luckily, the two were able to tap a deep well of support within their community, finding respite on the couches of Lily Seabird, Greg Freeman, and Thus Love’s Echo Mars. An unused attic provided their longest arrangement. The personal and economic chaos of living at the mercy of nameless powers-that-be redirected into a hyperfocused attention on Two Wheels Move the Soul. Returning to Little Jamaica Studios — one of the sites for their acclaimed debut Wild Guess — Cates, James, guitarist Will Krulak and bassist Carney Hemler hunkered down with their trusted engineer Benny Yurco. The familiarity between the cast of characters allowed the studio to become a sanctuary, and foregrounded Two Wheels Move The Soul’s constant foray into sonically adventurous terrain. “Everywhere else that we had to be, we were very much visitors,” James recalls. “When we were working on the record, it was nice because it felt like this is our space.” Still, an overwhelming sense of impending doom hangs over Two Wheels Move the Soul. Every scribble on the guitar thins the air, each stab of percussion and wave of distortion makes it that much harder to breathe. EMPATH CULT OBJECTS Cult Objects is celebrating their first LP release, Amulet! This new record sees the Philadelphia band move out of the basement and onto the dance floor. While still taking their emotionally raw blend of post-punk and noise rock with them, they added some gothy dance floor dissonance, haunting vocals, and grooving bass lines. They entered the studio to make a scrappy post punk record from 1982 that, if played next to ESG or Bush Tetras, would sound like they were recorded in the same studio weeks apart. Just weeks before joining legendary producer Ethan Johns (Paul McCartney, Laura Marling, Ray LaMontagne) in his West Country studio, the duo began writing at a small window table in Taylor’s North East London flat. They wanted to see what would happen if they didn’t overthink their songs, if they simply sang for themselves in the exact moment—candid reflections on love, fallibility, and staying vulnerable. They didn’t fuss over demos or arrangements; they just wanted to capture the feelings. They knew Johns thrived on intuition, so they let that sensibility guide them from the beginning. It’s a New York band, sure, but it’s also an ethos. A return to rock & roll’s roots — to garage bands toiling between the family minivans, to groups like the Beatles and their unique alchemy, to tape machines and live band recordings instead of slick studios and myriad songwriters. “We've kind of adapted the ethos of: with restriction comes creativity — old becomes new. And throughout every part of the process that remains true,” says guitarist/vocalist Jack Bradley.Never is that more apparent than on their self-titled third record, out August 6th on their own label. A rough and tumble suite of 12 songs that nods to everyone from The Kinks to The White Stripes, The Thing sounds like old New York revivicated and remixed. “It showcases all of us, all of our different personalities,” says bassist/vocalist Zane Acord. “In The Thing, we’re a collective band. We hang our hats on being a true band — where we all have the spotlight. I think that gives us a different edge.” That album follows 2023’s debut, Here’s the Thing, and The Things Is, which dropped the following year. The four members of Thing came from intersecting backgrounds, lending to their rock-and-roll-as-melting-pot vibe. Acord grew up with a drummer dad who hipped him to bands like Led Zeppelin and Grand Funk Railroad; he met guitarist/vocals Michael Carter — an avid Beatles fan — in middle school. The duo went on to collect Bradley in high school, an aspiring producer with a studio in his basement and a yen for psych rock. Jazz drummer Lucas Ebeling linked up with the band when everyone found their way to New York in 2022. They’ve since played more than 300 shows across the world. The band’s self-titled work, then, is a culmination of all those influences — and all that hustle. “We threw all of our different various influences throughout — all the decades of rock and roll and adjacent genres — and ended up with something of our own,” Bradley says. “Our contribution to the genre. Our style. Our… thing.”LONG LIVE THE THING. THE BAXBYS The four members of The Baxbys—Alex Nordlund (lead vocals/guitar), James Miller (lead guitar/vocals), Spencer Rosenfeld (bass/keys), and Chris Sciucco (drums)—formed in the basements of Amherst, Massachusetts in 2021. After amassing a loyal fanbase in the local college music scene, The Baxbys branched out to the rest of the Northeast, where they began selling out headlining shows and self-producing their first releases. Central to their identity is a democratic approach to songwriting; with every member contributing material, the band has a diverse and dynamic discography. The band’s collective creativity fuels their chorus-driven sound, defined by stacked guitar chords and powerful vocal performances. BARNEY CORTEZ

Over the course of nine new songs, the Antlers’ founder and primary songwriter Silberman reckons with our passively destructive tendencies – absentminded pollution, unwitting wastefulness, and the inadvertent devastation of the natural world. But despite its heavy themes, Blight is far from a punishing listen. With its adventurous arrangements and persistent momentum, it plays more like an iridescent odyssey. The album was recorded over the course of a few years, with the lion’s share tracked and produced in Silberman’s home studio in upstate New York, a compact outbuilding perched at the edge of a neighbor’s sprawling hayfield.“So much of the record was conceived while walking these massive fields,” he says. “I felt like I was wandering around an abandoned planet.” And in a sense, Blight does feel like science fiction, sounding as if it were delivered from the near future. The album is a work of meticulous world-building, teeming with ear candy and surprising stylistic shifts. While many songs begin with sparse elements— a fingerpicked guitar, hypnotic organ stabs, or a nimble piano melody — they rarely remain tethered to their foundations. They often reimagine themselves partway through, shifting mid-track from gentle ballad to throbbing electronica, only to land somewhere entirely different by the end. TŌTH Brooklyn-based songwriter and trumpet player Tōth (Alex Toth of Rubblebucket) willreturn with his third album – And The Voice Said – on February 27, 2026 (Northern Spy//Egghunt Records).
