SQUAWK BROTHERS

Squawk Brothers was formed by the members of Philly indie rock bands The Teeth/Purples in order to explore a country-influenced aesthetic. As the scope of the band evolved, the members finally grew tired of the “four dudes” template and have blossomed into a six-piece harmonic family with the addition of Eliza Becker and Nakita Beauregard. The newer members have thus far raised no objection to keeping the name as it is. Squawk Brothers released their debut album Melody Bird in early 2021.

LEV

LEV is “the introspective psychedelic romp of New Motels’ Josh Levandoski,” (John Vettese, The Key), a Jenkintown, Pennsylvania-based songwriter, teacher, and activist. Launching the project on Bandcamp in 2020, Levandoski has been regularly releasing music and is currently working on a new collection with engineers Kyle Pulley and Danny Murillo at Headroom Studios. In 2021, LEV recruited old friends and bandmates Kyle McDonough, Doug Wartman, and Jason Dooney to perform his compositions to live audiences. “Together, their sound is bold and expansive, and calls to mind a broad palette of reference points” (JV)—Pearl Jam, Kevin Morby, Dr. Dog, The New Pornographers, and Ty Segall, to name a few. The group’s most recent singles, “You Were Never Born”, “Side with the Kids”, and “Bright Future Choir” were all selected as WXPN Local Picks of the Day.

THE BRET TOBIAS SET

Bret cut his teeth co-fronting the Bigger Lovers, a Philly guitar pop group that swung for the fences in the aughts. The Lovers got four stars from David Fricke in Rolling Stone, opened for Wilco, recorded a World Cafe and built a small but loyal fanbase one bespectacled dude at a time. Bret re-emerged in 2023 with a set of dyspeptic, sharply observed contenders via the Pleaser EP. Butter Valley Malcontent followed a year later, and a yet-to-be named full length (Stunning Bunts maybe?) is due fall 2025. Krista Umile sings and plays strings and keys. Mike Kennedy bangs drums. Jeff Tanner’s demeanor is 100% bass-player but he plays guitar. Tracy Stanton holds down the low end.
