AIR IS HUMAN
Air is Human is Josh Aptner and Jeff Lucci; a duo that has been cultivating a sound that balances explosive beats and emotive Rhodes piano arrangements with bold, heavy, and atmospheric guitar melodies. The music is focused and through-composed, but within the arrangements there is a looseness that allows the specifics to be improvisational. Blending influences from downtempo and ambient with kraut and psych rock, the sound is loud and enveloping, yet still maintains a delicate and cinematic quality to it. The music aims to provoke each member of the audience to experience a uniquely personalized visual scene, or to compel a physical reaction: dance.
The music of Grimace Federation reaching the ears of the masses was never a forethought in its creation. Founded on a need to shift sound, vast musical influences and free-form improv sessions, the always evolving Philly unit has been armed with an arsenal of multi-layered, hallucinogenic beats and complex post-rock anthems. Their sonic collages create a symphonic, cinematic, and immense sound. With all their complexities, no words are needed to stir emotions, like a Robert Rauschenberg painting, a scene from a Jodorowsky film, or a drive down Mulholland.
SQUARE PEG ROUND HOLE
Square Peg Round Hole is an instrumental percussion-based trio described by NPR’s Bob Boilen as a “creative adventure.” Evan Chapman, Sean M. Gill, and Carlos Pacheco-Perez utilize drum kits, vibraphone, samples, found objects, synths, and vintage analog keyboards, to create music that draws on elements from post-rock, electronic, ambient, and contemporary classical genres. The music is expansive, intricately textured, and dynamic, but the group’s knack for hooks and melodic structure provides a soulful center. Square Peg’s studio albums illuminate the group’s capacity for exploration. Their second record, Juniper, released in 2016 on Spartan Records, garnered the band national attention.
